How many men do you know who are both gentlemanly and handy?
My grandfather, Cap, could make or fix anything, and he helped form my ideal in a husband. I never dreamed I’d find someone to live up to my expectations. One evening, early on in our relationship, Paul was over and the toilet broke. This is never a glamorous scene. It was too late to call a plumber. I thought to myself: If this guy can fix this thing, or at least keep it from leaking, I think this might work out. And he fixed it!
This was surprising to me since he had given me gifts of an antique pen set and poetry books, taken me to the Metropolitan Museum of Art on a first date and gallantly carried my coat around the entire museum because I had not wanted to check it. Hardly the stuff of guy who can do emergency repairs.
Paul studied fine arts, history and music in school and he excels at all of them! One of things I most love about him is that he reads to me…fairy tales, novels and the newspaper (skipping the bad news).
He plays piano, bass and guitar (I love his long fingers
and artistic hands) and the band
he used to be in played all over New York, even the even famous CBGB! He can
spend hours doing historical research. He’s working on a novel that takes place
in Versailles (and I have to brag here, he has a really wonderful, big literary
agent.) He even managed to learn
enough French to talk his way into private areas of the palace to do research.
But Paul does not have a bookworm personality! He has this amazing ability to
connect with anyone, and I mean anyone! UPS guy, Oscar-winning actress, baby on
the street, he connects with them all. When I met Paul and learned he had
worked with retarded adults I knew I’d met someone with lovely values. He would
tell me how beautiful “the clients” were. He really sees the beauty in a soul!
A painter, writer, musician, and scholar who has studied the ancient Greek
language as well as their ideals of classical art, Paul bypasses the appearance
of our physical shell, and sees beyond….
Some people are only kind when someone important is looking
or when they know they’ll be judged. Paul has observed: “What you do anywhere
is what you do everywhere.” He
always acts with heart and has total empathy. I am a vegetarian and Paul has
never once brought a steak into this house. (That doesn’t mean he doesn’t order
bacon when we eat out.)
And did I mention he’s creative? Just give him a piece of cardboard, scissors, a feather and vintage hat and he can whip up a pirate’s costume!
