We lived on the same street in an historic, tree-lined neighborhood in New York for a year before we met…in a grocery store. Paul was in a band (a paralegal by day, bass player by night) and Loren was an editor at a fashion/culture magazine. As we got to know each other over lunches, dinners, concerts and teas, we came to realize we shared many qualities…love of painting, books, animals (Loren adored knowing that Paul’s pet goat and dog enjoyed going for family drives), letter writing with a quill, music, celebrating holidays with family (especially Christmas), making things by hand, good manners, old movies, antiques (Paul has a 1920s phonograph, totally unplugged, Loren has a manual typewriter) and taking photos with vintage cameras. We even love our differences.
Paul loves maps…he looks at them before we go anywhere and magically seems to memorize them…streets, neighborhoods, routes, you name it, from Vienna to Nantucket to upstate New York. He can guide a cab driver to an obscure address; he has even helped out cabdrivers in Paris; Loren is more spontaneous and will always remember your astrological sign, favorite color and know what perfume you’re wearing, but won’t have a clue about what roads we took to get to your house.
After a courtship of many years, we have now been married for 8 years.
